Perplexity – My new AI assistant

Because ChatGPT doesn’t have all the answers…

[Originally published as The Marketing Mix newsletter on Substack]

I haven’t mentioned AI in a while. But I can tell you, I’ve been using ChatGPT less and less. Not because I’m tired of AI. No.

It’s because my head has been turned by Perplexity 😳

Perplexity provides detailed answers to any question. It includes links, sources, and citations. And the quality of writing is significantly better.

The best feature, though, is the “Related Questions”. These are smart, realistic follow-ups, which help you dig deeper into a subject.

I rarely ‘Google’ anything now. I’m not chatting with ChatGPT. Perplexity is my go-to

Perplexity is billed as an AI search engine. But in reality, I find it better at most things I originally used ChatGPT for.

I recently did a head-to-head test of three AIs – creating show-notes for the latest podcast episode from a transcript

ChatGPT did OK, but needed some significant editing. The weakest result (surprisingly) was from the AI notes in Riverside, my podcasting software. And Perplexity…well, I could have just cut and pasted it. It was that good. [I didn’t, though, because I still like to edit and write my own stuff😁 ].

The Sendoso Marketing Journey

Speaking of podcasts, the latest episode of The Marketing Mix features Kris Ruudegraap, co-founder and CEO of Sendoso.

He tells me about their initial marketing strategy, and how they scaled it as the company grew. The focus was on providing good quality data, over-investing in events, and creating targeted content.

All of which has paid off in the long run. His approach? “This is a marathon, not a sprint, so let’s focus on some SEO early on and two years later we’ll thank ourselves.

Rethinking SEO in the age of AI

Another podcast recommendation. Not mine this time! Eli Schwarz gives a good overview of how AI is impacting SEO in his interview on Lenny’s Podcast.

[If you don’t have 2 hours to spare😏, most of the good stuff is in the first 40 minutes.]

A Black Manhattan

As the nights start to get longer, it’s time to go back to my ‘comfort’ cocktail – the Manhattan. I’ve been mixing up with some different versions, and my current favorite is the Black Manhattan – replacing the vermouth with an amaro, and adding some extra bitters.

Officially, it should be Averna Amaro, but I’ve been enjoying Nonino in mine.

  • 2oz Rye Whisky (I’m using Great Jones)
  • 1oz Amaro Nonino Quintessentia
  • Dash of angostura bitters
  • Dash of orange bitters

Cheers! 🥃
